After a Sino-French romance blossoms and withers in Beijing, Hua (Ren Jie) decides to quit her job as a teacher in Beijing and heads to Paris to regain her boyfriend, but ultimately fails to win him back. Wandering in a strange city, the lost Hua encounters a French blue-collar worker, Mathieu (Tahar Rahim), who immediately showers this Chinese girl with affection and violently claims her, while the desperate Hua unintentionally develops feelings for Mathieu. Although Mathieu loves Hua madly, he and his friends seem to always see Hua as a promiscuous woman, and the gap between them gradually becomes a chasm. The disorienting days in Paris and the love-hate dynamics with Mathieu make Hua yearn for home, prompting her to explore what she truly wants in the space between sex and love, freedom and nostalgia… This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Chinese writer Liu Jie, who resides in Paris.
