A wealthy man has his eyes on a golf course, wanting to acquire it for the purpose of building other commercial facilities to gain greater profits. The chairman of the golf club, Smith (played by Ted Knight), certainly dislikes this decision, so he tries to find ways to obstruct the acquisition plan. Danny (played by Michael O'Keefe) is a caddy working at the golf course, relying on his meager salary to support his household and pay for his tuition. He hopes his boss will give him a raise but is refused, which leaves Danny resentful. Meanwhile, Danny falls in love with Smith's niece. Karl (played by Bill Murray) is a worker maintaining the lawn at the course, and he is shocked to discover that there are actually gophers on the course. In order to eliminate these annoying little creatures, Karl decides to take extreme measures.
