In 1951 Hollywood, all films with leftist viewpoints were heavily influenced by the "McCarthyism" and were blacklisted, leading to the persecution of many innocent filmmakers. Peter Appleton (played by Jim Carrey), a young and talented screenwriter newly entering the industry, found himself on the blacklist due to an inadvertent act in college. However, his nightmare was far from over; after losing his job and his girlfriend, he suffered from a car accident that left him with complete amnesia. When Peter is rescued by a kind-hearted local and brought to a small town called Lawson, the residents mistakenly believe him to be Luke, who died in World War II nine years earlier. Luke's father, Harry (played by Martin Landau), is overjoyed. Peter helps restore Harry's neglected cinema and finds a renewed passion for life through film. Luke's former girlfriend, Adele (played by Laurie Holden), also falls in love with Peter. Just when everything seems to be heading towards a happy ending, investigators arrive in the small town, demanding Peter to appear in court immediately. This film, directed by renowned filmmaker Frank Darabont and starring comedy star Jim Carrey, is the director's ambitious attempt to reach for an Oscar. However, both box office and critical reception were disappointing, yet it still achieves a level of perfection in its pursuit of excellence.
