From the outside, the Russell family appears to be a perfect model family: wealthy, harmonious, and with exceptional children, seemingly without any flaws. However, the matriarch, Sylvia Russell (Sonia Dresdel), is actually a cold-hearted, power-hungry woman with an overwhelming desire for control. She uses various methods to manipulate her husband Arthur (Walter Fitzgerald), her son Terry (Emrys Jones), and her daughter Finella (Barbara White). Dissatisfied with her husband's mediocrity, she ruthlessly humiliates him in subtle ways and destroys all his treasured possessions. Due to her discontent with her daughter marrying Dr. Valentin Christie (Scott Forbes) without her permission, she encourages their young maid Effie (Celia Lipton) to seduce her son-in-law to undermine her daughter's marriage. Terry is the only one in the family who notices his mother's peculiar behavior; although he wants to protect his sister and father, he is unaware of the extent of his mother's cruelty, which exceeds his imagination.
