Directed by Joseph Losey, this crime film has a noir style and was once touted as the toughest film in British cinema history. Although by contemporary standards the film's content may not seem excessive, the detailed depiction of 1960s British prisons, outstanding cinematography, Stanley Baker's excellent performance, and a captivating theme song make it quite compelling. The story follows ex-con Johnny Bannion as he collaborates with gangster Mike Carter to rob a racetrack. However, after being betrayed post-heist, he finds himself back in prison, with only he knowing where the stolen money is hidden. As Bannion seems to thrive in Block A, the warden deliberately transfers him to Block B, but with the help of Block B’s boss Frank Saffron, Bannion returns to Block A. Inside the prison, he learns that Mike Carter's influence is increasing. In order to retrieve the stolen money, Carter has taken Bannion’s girlfriend, Susannah, hostage. Bannion seeks Saffron's help, planning to escape and stop Carter.
