A single mother from the rural area of Shinshu (played by Chieko Iida) works diligently in a textile factory to support her only son, Ryosuke (played by Masao Yeayama), in his education. As graduation approaches, Ryosuke, influenced by his teacher, decides to continue his studies, but their poor financial situation makes it difficult for him to voice his ambitions. Understanding her son's feelings, the mother resolves to send Ryosuke to a university in Tokyo at all costs, hoping to provide him with a better life. Thirteen years pass quickly, and the adult Ryosuke (played by Shin'ichi Nishimura) graduates from school, marries, and settles down in Tokyo, while his mother remains in the rural area of Shinshu.
