Shuhei Horikawa (played by Chieko Nakakita), a teacher living in Kanazawa, is a man with a difficult life. His wife passed away early, and for many years, he has raised his son Ryohei alone while enduring hardships. During a school trip, a student unfortunately drowns, and Shuhei resigns as the responsible person. After losing his job, he returns to his hometown in Shinshu with his son and manages to find a meager job in the village. Ryohei studies diligently, and after entering middle school, he goes to a boarding school. In order to support his son's ongoing education, Shuhei goes to work in Tokyo alone. Over the years, the diligent Ryohei (played by Shuji Sano) successfully passes the entrance exam for Sendai Imperial University and later secures a teaching position at a school in Akita. He looks forward to reuniting with his father, but Shuhei dedicates himself fully to supporting his son's career, unwilling to hold him back. In these tumultuous years, the father and son find themselves in different places, gazing at each other from afar... The screenplay of this film was completed by Yasujiro Ozu on the eve of his military service in 1937.
