One day, Ryota and Ai find a young puppy by the roadside. With their grandfather's help, they persuade their somewhat stubborn father to adopt the puppy and name her Mari. Thus, Mari begins her new life with the Ishikawa family. As time flows by, Mari grows up and has three puppies of her own. Just when everyone believes that their joyous and happy life will continue, a powerful earthquake measuring 6.8 shatters this dream. Yuzo and Ai are trapped under a heavy beam, and the only one capable of helping is Mari. With Mari's assistance, the rescue team quickly locates the grandfather and granddaughter, but the helicopter used for rescue cannot bear any more weight, leaving Mari and the puppies behind in the disaster area.
