The principal of the Fort A.P. Hill Military Academy is a fiercely combative officer whose educational philosophy has always been to instill a strong fighting spirit in his students. However, the local government plans to demolish the academy to facilitate urban development. In the absence of a consensus between both parties, the local government forcibly tears it down, leading some students to vow to protect their school at all costs, arming themselves to confront the military and police. The plot of this film may seem a bit unbelievable, but director Harold Becker handles it tightly and powerfully, especially movingly portraying the students' pursuit of honor and responsibility. Several young stars involved in this film, including George C. Scott, Timothy Hutton, Ronny Cox, Sean Penn, and Tom Cruise, began to emerge from it.
