The film is adapted from a novel. It depicts the experience of a modern British girl, Anne, who, out of curiosity about her great-aunt Olivia's past life in India, goes to India for a field visit. The film weaves together two independently structured yet interconnected stories from different eras. Through alternating flashback sequences, it narrates Olivia's experiences in colonial India during the 1920s, becoming the mistress of an Indian prince, and after Anne follows in her great-aunt's footsteps to India, she also develops feelings for a handsome Indian man named Inder.
