Based on the novel of the same name by Genjiro Yoshida. After her brother's death and her father's serious illness, 16-year-old Akane (played by Fumiko Wakao) is forced to become a mistress to an elderly man in his sixties to support her family. After the death of the old man and her father, Akane returns to her rural hometown with her mother, but they face discrimination and disdain from the villagers. Shortly after, the model young man Kiyozaku (played by Takahiro Tamura) returns home from military service and receives a warm welcome from the villagers.
