Based on the novel of the same name by Genjiro Yoshida. After her brother's death and her father's serious illness, 16-year-old Akane (played by Fumiko Wakao) is forced to become a mistress to an elderly man in his sixties to support her family. After the death of the old man and her father, Akane returns to her rural hometown with her mother, but they face discrimination and disdain from the villagers. Shortly after, the model young man Kiyozaku (played by Takahiro Tamura) returns home from military service and receives a warm welcome from the villagers. During the time of Akane's mother's passing, Kiyozaku meets the reclusive Akane, and despite everyone's opposition, they eventually fall in love and come together. When conscription orders are issued again, Kiyozaku returns to the battlefield. After enduring humiliation and hardship, Akane finally looks forward to reuniting with her husband but learns that Kiyozaku is assigned a dangerous assassination mission. The woman who values love above all makes a crazy decision in the end...
