During World War II, Sachiko Kida (played by Hideko Takamine) is sent to Vietnam, which is occupied by Japan, where she meets a married man, Kengo Tominaka (played by Masayuki Mori), and they fall in love. After the defeat, Sachiko returns home and finds Tominaka's house in the decaying streets, discovering that he still lives with his wife (played by Chieko Nakakita) and has not divorced. They secretly meet and continue their relationship, but Tominaka remains ambiguous and has many excuses. After leaving Tominaka, Sachiko, feeling hopeless, starts living with a foreigner. Later, Kengo finds Sachiko, and they get back together, but while at the Ikaho hot springs, Tominaka becomes interested in the innkeeper's wife (played by Mariko Okada), and Sachiko finds out she is pregnant. Afterward, Tominaka has an accident and comes back to find Sachiko, and the two plan to start a new life together...
