The story takes place on Aguni Island, located on the western side of the Okinawa Islands, where the ancient custom known as "bone washing" is still preserved. After a local person passes away, their relatives bury the body on the western side of the island, and once the body has completely turned to white bones, it is taken out and cleaned. Only then can the deceased truly say goodbye to the living world. Shinsuke (played by Michitaka Tsutsui) has just returned to his hometown to help his mother Emiko (played by Yoshiko Oshima) with the bone washing ceremony, where he reunites with his long-estranged father Tsuna (played by Eiji Okuda). His mother’s death has profoundly impacted his father, who lives in sorrow daily and has fallen back into alcoholism. Accompanying Shinsuke back home is his sister Yuko (played by Aya Mizusaki), a hairdresser in Nagoya who also faces her own struggles.
