In 1955, Nobuhiro (played by Akira Chougen) lives with his father (played by Takahiro Tamura) and mother (played by Yumi Fujita) in a small restaurant by the muddy river in Osaka. His uncle, who works hard pulling horse carts, and an unknown man who fishes at night, are observed silently by the reticent Nobuhiro as he watches these people from the slum. One rainy day, Nobuhiro meets Kii (played by Minoru Sakurai), who lives on a houseboat across from the restaurant, and her sister, Ginko (played by Makiko Shibata), and they quickly become good friends. However, due to some unspeakable reasons, Kii's mother (played by Masako Kaga) is looked down upon by those around them, which constantly leaves a gloomy expression on the siblings’ faces. Despite this, they are very understanding and often visit Nobuhiro’s family. Until one day, Nobuhiro's father suddenly leaves home. Nobuhiro unexpectedly glimpses an unbearable secret on the boat… The film is one of the most heart-wrenching and powerful children's movies in film history.
