Colonel Hess of the U.S. Air Force was originally a pastor from Ohio. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. During a bombing mission over Nazi Germany, he accidentally bombed an orphanage, resulting in the deaths of 37 German orphans. After the war, feeling guilty, he couldn't return to preaching, so he rejoined the U.S. Air Force and went to the Korean War front to train the first group of fighter pilots for the South Korean Air Force. Under his training, the South Korean Air Force successfully completed a series of combat missions. Near the airbase, a Korean woman took care of a dozen or so orphans from the Korean War. Colonel Hess made an effort to protect and care for these orphans amid the warfare. Later, he organized fundraising to establish an orphanage, giving the Korean War orphans a place to call home, which brought peace to his conscience.
