The original work is the winner of the 48th Naoki Prize by Hitomi Yamaguchi. In the original, the protagonist is the head of the advertising department at an electronics company, but in the film, he is replaced by an advertising employee at a liquor company (which Yamaguchi worked at in the Suntory advertising department at that time), depicting the protagonist's journey to win the Naoki Prize. This film marked a significant evaluation for Kiyoshi Akimoto, who had been known for his male action films, as he brilliantly captured the twisted psychology of the wartime generation in this single work. The story portrays the challenges of a mediocre, slovenly salaryman working in a liquor company’s advertising department living earnestly, while intertwining his personal history and post-war history. Akimoto's direction is highly creative, depicting the young romance between the protagonist and his wife through synthesized animation of only geta and shoes, and illustrating the rise and fall of the father's business using set pieces and animation. Additionally, there are scenes where the colleagues behind the protagonist are depicted in stop-motion, analyzing the position of the character on screen from another perspective, showcasing excellent use of narration.
