An independent film by Yoshida Kijū, who left Shochiku to become a freelancer, based on the novel of the same name by Isizaka Yōjirō that depicts incest between a mother and son. Matsutani Shizuo is a salaryman living with his mother, Shizuka. Due to his father's illness and frequent hospital stays during his childhood, Shizuo has developed an introverted personality. Shizuka, raising Shizuo alone, has had an affair with the town's powerful figure, Hashimoto. Shizuka and Hashimoto encourage Shizuo to marry Hashimoto's daughter, Yumiko. Shizuo, who protests that they are "half-siblings marrying," eventually marries Yumiko. In his anguish, Shizuo engages in a relationship with his mother. Yoshida portrays the incestuous relationship as an introspective concept using photogenic imagery.
