The story takes place in the bustling metropolis of New York, where the wealthy attend lavish parties in their suits, while the poor are lost in the dark shadows, drowning in the temporary paradise created by alcohol and drugs. Helen (Kitty Winn) is haunted by a troubled past, filled with pain and confusion; she wants to escape her painful life but can never find the right way out. One day, Helen meets Bobby (Al Pacino), a small-time crook; both are lost souls with similar circumstances, and they gradually come together. As time goes by, Helen discovers that Bobby is actually an incurable drug addict, and she becomes trapped. The demand for drugs grows stronger and uncontrollable, leading Helen to even sell her body for drug money. When Bobby learns of all this, he falls into deep pain.
