The story takes place in a nightclub called "Birdcage," where Albert (Nathan Lane) is the star performer. Not only that, he and the nightclub owner, Armand (Robin Williams), are also a gay couple. One day, Armand's son, Val (Dan Futterman), whom he had with his ex-wife, comes to visit him, excitedly telling him that he is bringing his fiancée, Barbara (Calista Flockhart). While Armand is happy, he is also very nervous because Barbara's parents, Kevin (Gene Hackman) and Louis (Dianne Wiest), are conservatives. If they find out about his relationship with Albert, Val's marriage could be in jeopardy. Therefore, Armand begins to persuade Albert to pretend to be a normal person. Although Albert pretends to agree to Armand's request, he feels very upset inside.
