The film is adapted from Akihiro Dobashi's novel "Samurai Marathon during the Bakumatsu," set in the Edo period. It tells the story of the Anjō domain lord who orders the holding of a long-distance running competition called "Ansei Yuu-ashi" to strengthen the body and mind of the samurai against foreign threats; it is also Japan's earliest long-distance running competition. However, this event is mistakenly seen by the shogunate as a rebellion, leading to the dispatch of assassins to Anjō Castle, where no samurai are stationed, in an attempt to reclaim the territory... The film is co-produced by Jeremy Thomas ("The Last Emperor") and Toshimi Nakazawa ("Departures"), directed by Bernard Rose ("Anna Karenina"), with music by Philip Glass ("The Truman Show"), and costume design by Emi Wada ("Ran," "Hero").
