Romanian New Wave director Cristian Puiu takes another challenging leap with "The Provocative Commencement Dinner" (41st edition). In a lavish manor owned by a wealthy landlord, guests are invited to stay overnight while outside the world is frigid and wintry; inside, discussions are heated. Amid savoring food and drink, conversations unfold, debating religion, war, morality, and death, with viewpoints clashing intensely. Puiu maintains his signature long takes, and a few years ago he drew from the works of Russian philosopher Vladimir Solovyov for "Three Moral Exercises" (38th edition); this time, he stays true to the original text, reconstructing the atmosphere of the era, scrutinizing the characters’ dialogue styles, and delving into the details of costumes and settings, thoroughly returning to the text’s past tense.
