Billy Chappell (played by Kevin Costner), the soul of the Detroit Tigers for 19 years, faces a low point in his life: the team performs poorly this season, his old injuries flare up, his former team is about to sell the franchise, and the new owner plans to trade him as soon as he takes over. Meanwhile, his girlfriend Jane Aubrey (played by Kelly Preston) is moving to England. Alone at a hostile away game, he stands on the mound, pitching every ball with all his might, and reexamines his life.
