Young painter Jacques hitches a ride to Paris from the countryside. On the night he arrives in Paris, he encounters Mart, who is about to commit suicide by jumping into a river. Jacques saves her and accompanies her home, and they agree to meet again the next night. On the second night, Jacques and Mart share their life stories, and at Mart's request, Jacques becomes the messenger between her and her lover. However, the heartless lover does not reply, leaving Mart very disheartened. Over the next two nights, Jacques's feelings for Mart are finally reciprocated, and Mart confesses her love for Jacques. On the fourth night, just as the two are walking arm in arm, they unexpectedly run into Mart's original lover... The film is adapted from Fyodor Dostoevsky's short story "White Nights."
