In the ninth year of Genna (1623), Tokugawa Ieyasu's second shogun, Hidetada, died suddenly in Edo Castle's inner palace, and the cause of his death remains unclear. The question of the next shogun’s successor was immediately brought to the forefront. Hidetada favored his youngest son, Tadanaga (played by Teruhiko Saigo), and the imperial family in Kyoto also viewed him favorably, leading most of the ministers in Edo to fully support Tadanaga's ascension as the third shogun. On the other hand, Tadanaga's elder brother, Iemitsu (played by Hiroki Matsukata), is the legitimate heir to the third shogunate, backed by senior councilor Matsudaira Nobuyuki (played by Etsushi Takahashi) and other civil officials, as well as the shogun's swordsmanship master—Yagyu Munenori (played by Kinnosuke Nakamura) and his samurai family serving as a strong military support. To ensure Iemitsu succeeds the throne, the Yagyu clan formed widespread alliances, planted spies among their opponents, and even resorted to violent means to achieve their goals.
