During the Cold War in the 1960s, British spy Alec Leamas (played by Richard Burton) has been stationed in West Berlin for years engaged in espionage activities. However, after witnessing the shooting of a colleague who was undercover in East Germany by the East German border guards, Alec returns to the headquarters of the British Secret Intelligence Service to accept a top-secret ultimate mission. To infiltrate East Germany, Alec deliberately exposes his own vulnerabilities and even his fallibility to create a rift between the head of the East German intelligence agency, Mundt (played by Peter van Eyck), and his subordinate, Fiedler (played by Oskar Werner), thus undermining their power. However, under the complex guise of a double agent, Alec gradually realizes that he is merely an insignificant pawn, and the internal moral judgment and increasingly blurred lines between good and evil torment him deeply. This film is adapted from the espionage novel of the same name published in 1963. It has won 6 awards and received 4 nominations, with lead actor Richard Burton earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor at the 38th Academy Awards in 1966.
