Black worker Carl (Samuel L. Jackson) has his ten-year-old daughter brutalized by two white men. During a time of rampant racism, Carl doesn't believe that the law can help him and his daughter seek justice. So, he takes matters into his own hands and kills them. After the act of revenge, Carl goes directly to the police station to turn himself in. Young lawyer Jake (Matthew McConaughey) is assigned to defend Carl, but since Carl has no faith in the law's fairness towards Black individuals, they struggle to reach an agreement. Sure enough, in court, Carl faces unjust treatment. At this moment, law student Ellen (Sandra Bullock) appears, standing by Jake's side, and decides to mount a not-guilty defense for Carl. Although Jake gains support, his life is greatly threatened: the local Ku Klux Klan uses various methods to intimidate Jake, even threatening to blow up his house! Carl witnesses Jake and others' efforts, and he decides to unite with them to fight for justice.
