The story takes place in 1951 Texas, where old cowboy Sam (Ben Johnson) runs a movie theater, becoming an unforgettable bright spot in the memories of local youth. High school students Sonny (Timothy Bottoms) and his friend Duane (Jeff Bridges) are regulars at the theater and have a strong camaraderie with Sam. Sonny has experienced several unfulfilling romances, leaving him deeply affected. Both he and Duane fall for the passionate girl Jessie (Cybill Shepherd), but ultimately Jessie chooses Sonny, which leaves Duane heartbroken and causes him to leave. The news of Sam's passing hits Sonny hard, and together with Duane, he watches the last movie at Sam’s theater, which is also the final showing of the cinema.
