Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name by Martha Norman, the film features outstanding performances by two generations of leading actresses, Anne Bancroft and Sissy Spacek. One morning in 1983, in a lonely American town, Jessie tells her mother Thelma that she will end her life today, and Thelma must do everything possible to help her daughter find hope for living... The film was nominated for the competition section at the 1987 Berlin Film Festival, and Anne Bancroft received a Golden Globe nomination for her nearly perfect performance.
