Lola (Lana Turner) and Susie (Sandra Dee) are a pair of dependent mother and daughter. In her work, Lola is a strong woman who always devotes most of her time to her busy job, naturally neglecting her daughter over time, leading to a growing gap between them. This rift culminates in tragedy when they both fall in love with the same man. Anne (Juanita Moore) is a Black woman, and her daughter Sarah (Susan Kohner) is biracial. Sarah has always felt ashamed of her mother's skin color, which continuously hurts Anne's feelings. However, maternal instinct drives Anne to forgive Sarah time and again and to love her just the same.
