Hank (Frederic Forrest) is a mechanic who deals with old cars every day, while Franny (Teri Garr) works at a travel agency. The two have been living together as a couple for five years, and their relationship is very strong. However, on the night of their fifth anniversary, Hank and Franny have a fierce argument, and in a moment of impulse, they decide to break up. Later, Hank encounters a circus performer named Lila (Nastassja Kinski), and a passionate spark ignites between them. Meanwhile, Franny meets the charming and handsome Ray (Raul Julia). However, it isn't until they start to develop new relationships that they realize they are actually meant for each other.
