The story depicts a mother who single-handedly raises her two children, even resorting to black market dealings and selling her body, yet her children show no gratitude. Ultimately, the mother is forced to end her life in despair. Kinoshita Keisuke is a director skilled in lyrical storytelling, often showcasing beautiful visuals and pleasant soundtracks in his works. However, this film breaks from his usual style, presenting a unique perspective. In this film, Director Kinoshita uses realistic strokes to portray a harsh story. The protagonist is a woman suffering from the ravages of war, while her two children show no understanding of her struggles, selfishly and ruthlessly driving her to the brink. The visuals of the film are strikingly calm and unembellished, resembling a news documentary, which instead creates a shocking impact. The film was selected as one of the top ten films of the year by the Film Daily in 1953, and Yuko Mochizuki, who played Haruko, received the Best Actress award from the Daily Film Selection.
