Marcos (Walter Matthau) is a stubborn but kind-hearted man who has been bickering with his neighbor Joe (Jack Lemmon) for decades. Despite their frequent and intense arguments, almost to the point of not recognizing each other, it seems they have never tired of the joy that these disputes bring. Even as their children are about to tie the knot, making them future in-laws, the atmosphere of their banter shows no signs of diminishing. When Marcos sees the sweet interactions between Joe and his wife, Ariel (Ann Margret), he can't help but feel a pang of loneliness. He longs to experience the beauty of love again, just like Joe. Then, a turning point arrives. The bait shop that has been operating in town for years closes down, and a mother-daughter duo from Italy takes over and transforms it into a restaurant. This change angers both Marcos and Joe because the opening of the restaurant means they will lose their place to purchase fishing gear and bait, and the influx of customers will disrupt the tranquility of the creek, potentially preventing them from fishing altogether.
