The story takes place in the northeastern United States in the 19th century, where Abigail (played by Katherine Waterston) and her husband Daya (played by Casey Affleck) run a farm. The heavy farm work leaves no room for communication between Abigail and her husband, and the recent loss of their daughter due to illness further distances their relationship.
