The film is presented in the form of a diary. The aimless young man Michel (played by Martin LaSalle) witnesses a thief in action at the racecourse, and is captivated by the thief's confident and elegant technique, which leads him to join in the theft. A book lover who adheres to nihilistic philosophy, Michel firmly believes that theft is a ballet of the fingers, and a perfect heist is akin to a splendid performance art. Michel has a long-absent, gravely ill mother, and while visiting her, he meets the neighbor Jeanne (played by Marika Green), who has been caring for her. The beautiful Jeanne awakens long-dormant feelings within Michel. Michel becomes a target for the police; although the sheriff repeatedly offers him chances to reform, Michel remains addicted to his "art" and is unable to extricate himself. Before long, Michel is arrested. Jeanne visits Michel in prison and reveals her true feelings to him. In tears, Michel suddenly realizes that as long as there are loved ones in life, existence is not meaningless.
