Former boxer Jōki Ranjirō (played by Yujiro Ishihara) has gone through the ups and downs of life and now runs a restaurant called "Reef" in a port. He waits every day for letters from faraway Brazil, where his brother lives, always ready to embark on a journey to that land of freedom. However, countless letters eventually end up with the response "No such person found." One night, Ranjirō encounters a flustered woman who introduces herself as Sae Yoko (played by Mie Nakahara), a singer from a nightclub who is hiding after injuring a man who attempted to assault her, feeling desperate to take her own life. Ranjirō shelters Yoko, and their brief time together leads to a mutual fondness. But dark clouds gather as Yoko is eventually taken away by the gang controlling her.
