A young office worker moves to the suburbs, only to find that a storm is brewing; adults and children are each performing different power games in their respective worlds. A pair of new little brothers are bullied to tears by a neighboring child, and later become little tyrants by borrowing someone else's strength. The younger brother witnesses his spineless father play the clown to please his boss, and in a fit of anger, scolds his father and then stages a hunger strike. Eventually, the warm rice balls are fed to their mouths, and the family ends on a harmonious note, with the child experiencing the "precious" first lesson of life. Are adults really hypocritical, or is there some truth to it? The original script had the eldest son running away from home, but Ozu made significant changes, and his youthful abandon has now left us as well. The Japanese film magazine "Eiga Shunbun" selected it as the best film of the year.
