Matt (played by Tom Wilkinson) and Ruth (played by Sissy Spacek) are a married couple who have been together for many years. They have a son, Frank (played by Nick Stahl), and the family shares a strong bond. However, Matt and Ruth are troubled by one thing: their son Frank has fallen in love with a woman he shouldn't have—Natalie (played by Marisa Tomei). Natalie, who is beautiful and seductive, is not only much older than Frank but also has two children. To make matters worse, she is not officially divorced from her husband Richard (played by William Mapother); they are merely separated, and Richard is a notorious scoundrel in town. Matt and Ruth's concerns are soon validated when Richard finds Natalie and Frank.
