Leonard (played by Barbara Bel Geddes) has dreamed since childhood of marrying a wealthy husband and being a full-time housewife. As she grows up, she falls in love with millionaire Smith (played by Robert Ryan) and they eventually tie the knot. However, after marriage, Leonard discovers that married life is not as beautiful as she imagined, and Smith has a hidden dark side. Leonard wants to divorce Smith. Leonard runs away from home; she would rather work as a receptionist in a clinic and support herself than live under Smith's oppressive authority. At the clinic, Leonard encounters a doctor named Larry (played by James Mason), and they fall in love. At the same time, Leonard finds out she is pregnant.
