Max (James Spader), a twenty-seven-year-old successful advertising executive, recently lost his wife. To this day, he has not been able to overcome the sorrow of her passing, leading him to become reclusive and gloomy. One day, he goes to a small bar to drown his sorrows, where he meets a forty-three-year-old waitress named Nora (Susan Sarandon). Fate draws these two vastly different people together; Nora helps Max momentarily forget his pain, and Max teaches Nora about respect. As time passes, they fall in love. However, their relationship, which others see as mismatched, is destined to face many tests. Will their true love be able to overcome societal disapproval and the significant gap between them?
