Since the death of his mother-in-law Koh (Yoko Nogiwa), Watanabe Kogoro (Kazuki Higashiyama) has seen his wife Fuku (Noriko Nakagawa) fall into deep despair. Concerned for his wife's well-being, Kogoro decides to sort through his mother-in-law's belongings at the suggestion of his colleague, the constable Suminoe Hikozaburo (Syu Matsuo). A refreshing young man named Yachiyo (Kentaro Ito) arrives at the Watanabe household. While working as a helper at an oil shop, he also engages in exchanging unnecessary items from people, acting as a "middleman." However, their tenement is bought by a yakuza and forcibly destroyed. In the chaos, Ohtane's mother is killed. Yachiyo escapes with Ohtane, only to find out that the mastermind behind the incident is Sogaya Chubei, and he takes his case to the town magistrate. However, the officer Masumura Rintaro (Katsuhisa Namase) is pressured from above and does not proceed with the investigation. Filled with unresolved resentment, Ohtane learns about a third-party contact from Ryu (Yuri Chinen) and the tile merchant Jinhachiro (Kenichi Endo). Determined to earn a fee for the exchanges, Yachiyo gathers coins and requests "work." The assassins respond to his call, taking out targets one by one. Meanwhile, Yachiyo, eager to make Ohtane happy, decides to formalize the item exchange as a business with the encouragement of Kazusaya Seiuemon. With Seiuemon, who has connections to the senior councilor Suwa Mori Tadaetsu (Shozo Hayashiya), as his backer, Yachiyo's business quickly gains traction and money starts flowing in.
