The unprecedented Great East Japan Earthquake, along with the ensuing tsunami and nuclear leak, destroyed countless lives, including that of 15-year-old middle school student Yuichi Sumida (played by Shota Sometani). After the disaster, he lives with his mother (played by Makiko Watanabe) and other victims like Yano (played by Tetsu Watanabe) and Tamura (played by Mitsuaki Fukiue) in their family's rented boat yard, occasionally enduring harassment from his gambling father (played by Ken Mitsuishi) and the loan shark Kaneko (played by Hitomi). Among his classmates, Keiko Chazawa (played by Tomomi Nikaido) is the only one who appreciates Sumida; she records every brilliant quote he makes and intrudes into his life. They are willing to be ordinary people without accomplishments, yet they cannot escape the relentless pressures of a cruel life. One bloody night, Sumida commits an unforgivable crime, leading to a path of self-destruction... This film is adapted from the manga by Minoru Furuya and won the Best New Actor Award at the 68th Venice Film Festival (Shota Sometani & Tomomi Nikaido).
