Director Kathryn Bigelow, known for "The Hurt Locker" and "Zero Dark Thirty," is set to collaborate again with "The Hurt Locker" screenwriter Mark Boal to create a film about the 1967 Detroit race riots. The film currently has no title, with plans to begin casting in March and start shooting this summer. The 1967 Detroit race riots were one of the most destructive racial outbreaks in American history, sparked by police entering a bar in a Black neighborhood around midnight on July 23 to arrest a Black man. This enforcement action triggered anger among the Black community, who responded by throwing stones and bricks at the police. Later, police reinforcements arrived and forcibly dispersed the crowd, which backfired, leading to an even larger assembly of Black individuals and ultimately triggering widespread unrest that affected the entire city. The riots lasted for five days, resulting in 43 deaths, the destruction of many buildings, and numerous injuries. The unrest also spread to Illinois, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Maryland. This film is planned for release in 2017, marking the 50th anniversary of the riots.
