Marcus (Richard Gibson) invites his classmate and friend Leo (Dominic Guard) to his home. Thus, Leo meets Marcus's sister Marian (Julie Christie), who leaves a deep impression on him with her beauty and kindness. Marcus contracts an infectious disease and is unable to play with Leo, leading Leo to meet a farmer named Ted (Alan Bates), who asks Leo to deliver a letter to Marian. Leo agrees. Later, Leo befriends a veteran named Hugh (Edward Fox) and is shocked to learn that Marian's family intends to betroth her to Hugh. Furthermore, Leo accidentally discovers that the letters he has been delivering for Ted to Marian are, in fact, love letters.
