When Yumiko (played by Makiko Esumi) was a child, her grandmother often ran away from home, insisting on returning to the countryside to live out her days, and one time she left and never returned. Later, Yumiko got married and had children, living a poor but happy little life, until one day her husband, Ikuo (played by Tadanobu Asano), unexpectedly passed away. After being a widow for several years, Yumiko, along with her young son, married a man named Minxiong (played by Goshi Naito) and moved to a distant small village by the mountains and the sea. From then on, she lived a stable and happy simple life, day after day. However, deep in her heart, there was a lingering question: she could not understand why Ikuo committed suicide. A series of unexpected events drove Yumiko to leave home, and while she was by the sea, struggling with her thoughts, Minxiong caught up to her and answered the question that had been haunting Yumiko.
