Stan (played by John Cusack) works in a supermarket and lives with his two daughters, Heidi and Dora, while his wife Grace is a soldier currently on the battlefield. Stan's life is ordinary; he cares for his daughters but sets strict expectations. The news of his wife's unfortunate death reaches Stan, but he cannot bear to tell his children, who miss their mother day and night. He decides to fulfill his children's purest wish and takes them to a theme park. Heidi and Dora learn from their uncle that their father cannot be a soldier due to vision problems, despite his strong patriotic feelings. Heidi senses something different about her father but dares not say much. On the way, Stan and Heidi engage in many conversations, getting to know each other better.
