Elementary school teacher Rachel (Joanne Woodward) is thirty-five years old and still lives a lonely life. With her father's death, the relationship between her and her mother (Kate Harrington) becomes increasingly strained. At school, Rachel's colleague Carla (Estelle Parsons) seems quite infatuated with Rachel, but Rachel feels nothing for her. One day, Rachel encounters her former high school classmate Nick (James Olson), and under Nick's guidance and temptation, she tastes the sweetness of passion for the first time. However, just as Rachel decides to start a new romance with Nick, she discovers that Nick is a complete playboy. Yet, despite this, the pure-hearted Rachel still invests her feelings, only to receive a cold rejection. Life still seems long for Rachel, but she feels that she is already old.
