British boy Billy Casper (played by David Bradley) lives in a broken working-class family. His father has left home, and besides his mother and brother, Billy also has to work to support the family. At school, Billy misbehaves or skips classes to read comic books, looking for the happiness expected at his age. One day, he discovers an eagle's nest on a high wall at a farm, so he steals a falconry book from a bookstore and raises a young eagle named Kes according to the book's instructions... This film won the BAFTA Award for Best Director, was nominated for Best Film, Best Supporting Actor, Best Newcomer, Best Screenplay, and received the Crystal Globe Award at the 1970 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
