In the late 1960s, tensions were high on the Korean Peninsula as both sides engaged in frenzied espionage and assassination operations. In January 1968, Kang In-chun (played by Hyun Bin) was sentenced to death for murder. Before his execution, he was suddenly summoned to the detention room to discuss the conditions for an alternative to the death penalty with a special forces officer. He would be sent to the remote island of Real Tail Island in the southwest to undergo special military training.
