Is it the unfairness of heaven that women should live a life full of misfortunes and solitude? In the spring of the twelfth year of Showa, the young and beautiful Noriko (played by Hideko Takamine) marries the eldest son Koichi (played by Akira Takarada) of a lumber dealer in Honmachi. Shortly after their marriage, the family falls into decline; her father-in-law, after a failed investment, commits suicide with a geisha. The following year, the Second Sino-Japanese War breaks out, and the three towns of Wuhan fall. At the same time, Noriko gives birth to a son named Kohei. Their humble happiness does not last long, as with the expansion of the Pacific War, Koichi is conscripted and never returns. Noriko and her mother-in-law (played by Natsuko Yahara) struggle to support the small family, during which they receive considerable help from Koichi's friend Akimoto (played by Tatsuya Nakadai) from his lifetime, and Noriko gradually falls in love with this reliable man. But life seems intent on making things difficult for this poor woman; happiness always eludes her...
