At the beginning of the Republic of China, the decaying Qing government was overthrown by revolution, and the thoughts of democracy and progress rapidly swept across the entire land. However, the situation was chaotic, and with the people's ignorance, superstition and feudal beliefs still filled the era of China. A strange incident occurred in the Chen family mansion in Heishui Town, where Chen Facai's fourth concubine, Li Xiangling, mysteriously died in her home. On the night of Li Xiangling's death, her personal maid, Xiao Lan, suddenly began to sing, performing Li Xiangling's favorite song, with her posture and tone mirroring that of Li Xiangling in life. The crowd speculated, claiming that the maid Xiao Lan had been "possessed" by Li Xiangling's vengeful spirit. Since then, strange occurrences have continuously plagued the Chen family mansion. The household privately attributed Li Xiangling's death to her breach of taboos, bringing misfortune upon herself. However, the young detective Wang Zhizhang dismissed the supernatural claims; he believed that everything happening in the Chen family mansion was the result of someone staging tricks. Wang Zhizhang had previously received reports of several cases of missing persons, most of whom were somehow connected to the Chen family's mansion. To further uncover the secrets of the Chen mansion, Wang Zhizhang decided to investigate. Based on previous intel, he knew that Mr. Chen was stubbornly superstitious, so Wang disguised himself as a Taoist priest to successfully infiltrate the Chen family. However, upon entering the mansion, he found the atmosphere oppressive and Mr. Chen's household code strict, punishing servants at will. From the housekeeper Chen Zhong, who handled all the chores, to the cook Baoshan, the servants lacked even the most basic dignity and submitted to Mr. Chen's tyranny. The people in the mansion were burdened with secrets, each with their hidden agendas; it seemed that everyone had something to hide. Despite their outward civility, the Chen family uniformly adhered to the family rule that no one was allowed to approach the ancestral hall. Yet, the fourth concubine had entered the ancestral hall before her death, which made Wang Zhizhang increasingly wary that something strange was afoot there.
